## Definition

a metal tube or special cable that carries light, sound, or radio waves from one place to another. It keeps the waves inside so they do not spread out and lose power.

For teachers: a hollow metallic tube or dielectric structure that directs electromagnetic or acoustic waves along a defined path with minimal loss. Typically rectangular or circular in cross-section and dimensioned to support specific propagation modes.

## Examples

- The antenna sends radio waves through a metal waveguide.
- The engineer replaced the damaged waveguide to restore the radar signal between the transmitter and the antenna.
- Designed to confine microwaves with minimal attenuation, the satellite's waveguide routes high-frequency signals from the amplifier to the dish without leaking energy into surrounding components.
