## Definition

to cooperate with other people to achieve a shared goal.

For teachers: An intransitive phrasal verb meaning to collaborate on a task, often followed by an infinitive clause expressing the shared objective.

## Examples

- We work together to clean the house.
- The two departments often work together to develop new marketing strategies.
- Rival city-states would sometimes work together to repel a common external threat, despite their otherwise constant animosity.

## Pitfalls

- Not "They work together for finish the report." but "They work together to finish the report." — The purpose or goal is expressed with the 'to' infinitive, not 'for'.

## Usage notes

- Often followed by 'on' + a project or 'to' + a verb describing the goal.
- Teaching tip: Contrast with 'work alone' or 'work independently'. A simple classroom activity is giving pairs a problem that can only be solved with information from both partners.
