## Definition

the short way to write 'would not' in a sentence. You use it to say that someone did not do something or that something did not happen.

For teachers: the contracted form of 'would not'. Used to express a negative conditional or a refusal.

## Examples

- I didn't know the answer, so I wouldn't try to guess.
- If I had more time, I wouldn't mind helping you with the project, but I am busy today.
- The witness claimed he wouldn't have testified against his former partner if he hadn't been promised immunity from prosecution.
