00 / Overview
TOEIC
TOEIC tests English for work. ETS runs it. Employers in many countries, especially in Asia, use TOEIC scores in hiring and promotion.
01 / Purpose
TOEIC Listening and Reading tests everyday workplace English, such as emails, meetings, notices and phone calls. TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests spoken and written work tasks.
02 / Examination body
ETS, the Educational Testing Service, writes and runs TOEIC, as it does TOEFL iBT.
03 / Levels and scores
Listening and Reading is scored from 10 to 990. Speaking and Writing has its own scores and has no CEFR level on this page.
| TOEIC Listening and Reading total | CEFR level |
|---|---|
| 120–224 | A1 |
| 225–549 | A2 |
| 550–784 | B1 |
| 785–944 | B2 |
| 945–990 | C1 |
ETS gives these as guidelines, not fixed cut-offs. TOEIC Listening and Reading tops out at C1, so C2 has no TOEIC score.
04 / Where to take it
TOEIC is taken at ETS test centres in many countries. Organisations can also arrange group testing for their staff.
05 / How useful it is
TOEIC is mainly a work test. Employers, schools and government bodies use it to check workplace English for hiring, promotion and training.
For university entry, TOEFL iBT or IELTS is usually the better choice.
