During precedes a noun phrase, while while introduces a clause with a subject and a verb.

during

precedes a noun or noun phrase

The power went out three times during the storm last night.

while

introduces a clause with a verb

I fell asleep while I was watching that long documentary.

  • The fire alarm rang while the lunch break.

    The fire alarm rang during the lunch break.

  • I listened to a podcast during I was driving to work.

    I listened to a podcast while I was driving to work.
