Alternatives to 'if'

B2 Upper Intermediate

This guide explores conditional conjunctions used to replace 'if' to add precision, emphasis, or specific conditions to a sentence.

Overview

While if is the standard conditional conjunction, other terms provide more specific meanings. Unless introduces a negative condition, meaning 'except if'. Provided (that) and as long as emphasize that a specific condition must be met for the result to happen. Even if suggests that the result will not change, regardless of the condition.

Structure and Usage

Alternative + Subject + Verb, Subject + Verb

These alternatives follow the same tense patterns as standard conditionals. When the conditional clause comes first, a comma is required before the main clause.

Examples

Common mistakes

  • I won't go unless you don't come with me.

I won't go unless you come with me.

'Unless' already contains a negative meaning; using another negative in the clause creates an incorrect double negative.

  • Provided if you finish early, we can leave.

Provided you finish early, we can leave.

Do not use 'if' immediately after 'provided' or 'providing'.
