The phrase originates from the physical exertion required to operate a grindstone, a tool historically powered by waterwheels or foot-operated treadles. The initial use of the image was not one of self-discipline but of external coercion, suggesting a level of labour so intense that the worker was physically pressed toward the rotating stone.

The expression first appears in English in 1557, within an anonymous translation of Erasmus’s Merry Dialogue. In this context, it functioned as a hyperbolic threat of punishment for an abusive husband. The domestic threat of the 16th century later shifted into a description of general workplace management, characterising the habits of those who compelled others to work without respite.

The shift toward the modern sense of voluntary, diligent effort developed only after the phrase had spent significant time as a metaphor for being bullied or punished. The grindstone remains the central image, though the person responsible for applying the pressure has moved from the overseer to the worker.
