first recorded 21st c.
The term originates from a scene in the 2008 film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The title character, seeking to survive a nuclear detonation, takes refuge inside a lead-lined refrigerator. He is subsequently propelled to safety by the blast, an occurrence the audience found significantly less plausible than the film's previous supernatural themes. By 2008, the phrase had entered the lexicon to mark the exact moment a creative work descends into absurdity.
