A calque of the Russian потёмкинская деревня (potjómkinskaja derévnja), the term refers to Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin. In 1787, the Russian minister reportedly directed the construction of fake settlements in Crimea to provide a more agreeable view for Empress Catherine II during her visit. Whether the mobile facades were as elaborate as the legend suggests, the name of the minister remains attached to the practice of erecting a hollow front to deceive a visiting superior.
