Promethean fire

In the beginning, the stories say, humankind lived in caves and in cold, without craft or comfort, while the gods kept fire jealously to themselves. Fire was more than warmth — it was the seed of every skill, the light by which a mind could learn to make and shape and build. And the gods did not mean for mortals to have it.

But the Titan Prometheus loved humankind and pitied their darkness. He stole a single ember from the sun's own wheel, or from the hearth of the gods — the tale is told both ways — and hid it glowing in the pith of a fennel stalk, and carried it down through the sky to the world of men.

He set it in their hands, and everything changed. With that one flame they warmed their homes, forged tools and weapons, fired clay into pots, and by its flickering light began to think in new ways. From that single spark grew every art and science that ever lifted a human being above the beasts.

It was never only heat that Prometheus gave. The fire in his gift stood for the inner fire too — the flash of understanding, the spark of invention, the light that wakes in a mind and lets it create what was never there before. That was his true theft: not warmth, but the divine power to make.

So Promethean fire means that spark itself — the transforming gift of knowledge, creativity, or inspiration that, once handed to someone, changes them forever and sets them making, learning, and building things they never could before.
