fixed phr.. you use this to introduce a reason that supports what you just said. It can also mean that something happened despite what you expected.

CONTEXTUAL

He decided to attend the party after all, even though he originally said he was too tired.

COMPLEX

The research team decided to publish the findings after all, concluding that the data, while controversial, was too significant to remain hidden from the public eye.

Usage

can appear at the beginning or the end of a clause to add emphasis or contrast.

Teaching tip

help students distinguish between the 'reason-giving' sense (similar to 'because') and the 'contrary to expectation' sense (similar to 'in the end').

Pitfall

After of all, he is my brother.After all, he is my brother.do not add 'of' between 'after' and 'all' when using this as a fixed phrase.
