SIMPLE

It rained all day. As a result, the game was cancelled.

CONTEXTUAL

The flight was delayed for hours, and as a result, we missed our connecting flight.

COMPLEX

The central bank raised interest rates aggressively; as a result, inflation began to cool, but the risk of a recession loomed larger.

Usage

It often begins a sentence and is followed by a comma to introduce a consequence.

Teaching tip

Contrast with 'as a result of', which must be followed by a noun or noun phrase, not a full clause.

Pitfall

As a result the game was cancelled.As a result, the game was cancelled.When 'as a result' starts a sentence, it should be followed by a comma.
