COMPLEX

Origin

From Middle English ech other, yche othere, ich othir, eche other, ilk oþer, from Old English ǣlċ ōþer (“each other”), equivalent to each + other. Cognate with Scots ilk other (“each other”), West Frisian elkoar (“each other”), Dutch elkander, elkaar (“each other”).

Usage

Teaching tip

Contrast with 'one another'; while traditionally 'each other' was for two and 'one another' for more than two, they are now largely interchangeable in modern English.

Pitfall

The student helps each other. The students help each other.'Each other' requires a plural subject because the action must happen between two or more people.
