garage
n. countablen. a building or a part of a house where you park cars. It can also mean a shop where mechanics fix broken vehicles.
n. a building or indoor space designed for the storage of motor vehicles; alternatively, a commercial establishment where automotive repairs and maintenance are performed.
I park my car in the garage every night.
The mechanic at the local garage said the repairs would take at least three days to complete.
While the house itself required significant renovation, the detached three-car garage was in pristine condition and offered ample space for a professional-grade workshop.
Borrowed from French garage (“keeping under cover, protection, shelter”), derivative of French garer (“to keep under cover, dock, shunt, guard, keep”), from Middle French garer, garrer, guerrer; partly from Old French garir, warir (from Old Frankish warjan); and partly from Old French varer (“to fight, defend oneself, protect”), from Old Norse varask (“to defend oneself”), reflexive of vara (“to ware, watch out, defend”); both ultimately from Proto-Germanic warjaną (“to defend, ward off”), warōną (“to watch, protect”), from Proto-Indo-European wer- (“to close, cover, protect, save, defend”).
In British English, the term is also frequently used to refer to a petrol station.
