Pronunciation

Japanese phonology typically prohibits consonant-final syllables (except for the nasal /n/), which causes the addition of an epenthetic vowel /o/ to the final alveolar stop /d/. This results in the pronunciation /haddo/ or /hado/.

Grammar

Japanese verbs do not change for person or number, and the past tense suffix 〜た (-ta) is highly regular. Learners may incorrectly apply this regularity to other irregular English verbs because 'had' is one of the few past forms encountered before the general rule of '-ed' is mastered.
