Usage

Often used to contrast a previous state with the current one, sometimes followed by 'but now...'.

Teaching tip

Contrast with 'at present' and 'in the future'. This phrase is a simple but powerful tool for practising the past simple tense.

Pitfall

In past, life was very different.In the past, life was very different.The definite article 'the' is a required part of this fixed phrase.
