n. countable
C2 Proficiency US //ˈnufəndɫənd// new·found·land Archaic Informal

n. a very large, strong dog with thick fur that is famous for being a great swimmer and a gentle companion.

n. a large, powerful breed of working dog originating from Canada, known for its water-resistant double coat, webbed feet, and calm temperament.

SIMPLE

The Newfoundland jumped into the lake to swim.

CONTEXTUAL

Because of their massive size and natural swimming ability, Newfoundlands are often trained for water rescue missions.

COMPLEX

The Newfoundland is historically prized by fishermen for its ability to haul nets to shore and rescue sailors from the frigid, turbulent waters of the North Atlantic.

Origin

From Middle English new found lande (in a letter, apparently written in 1499, from Henry VII of England to his lord chancellor, Cardinal John Morton, about the North American land explored by Sebastian and John Cabot, a likely location being Newfoundland, or the name later being specifically narrowed down to it), equivalent to newfound + land.

Usage

When referring to the dog breed, it is usually capitalised.
