fixed phr.. each other. You use this when two or more people do the same thing to each other or have the same relationship.

fixed phr.. a reciprocal pronoun used to indicate that each member of a group of two or more performs the same action toward the other(s). While traditionally reserved for groups of three or more, it is now used interchangeably with 'each other' in most contexts.


SIMPLE

They really love one another.

CONTEXTUAL

The team members always help one another when a project becomes too difficult for one person to handle.

COMPLEX

In a truly collaborative environment, researchers must be willing to share their findings and challenge one another's assumptions to reach a deeper truth.

Usage

more common in formal or written English than 'each other'.

Teaching tip

explain that while some older grammar books say 'each other' is for two people and 'one another' is for three or more, modern speakers rarely follow this rule.

Pitfall
