outfielder
n. countablen. a player in baseball or softball who stands in the large grassy area far away from the person hitting the ball. Their job is to catch long balls and throw them back to the center of the field.
n. a defensive player positioned in the grassy area beyond the infield. Typically refers to the left fielder, center fielder, or right fielder whose primary responsibility is catching fly balls and fielding ground hits.
The outfielder caught the ball just before it hit the ground.
The coach moved the outfielder closer to the fence because the next batter was known for hitting long home runs.
A successful outfielder must possess not only the speed to track down deep fly balls but also the arm strength required to make accurate throws to the infield.
From outfield + -er.
