n. a province in eastern Canada, the largest by area and the only one with a predominantly French-speaking population. It maintains a distinct legal and cultural identity within the Canadian federation.

SIMPLE

I am planning a trip to Quebec this winter.

CONTEXTUAL

Many travelers visit Quebec to experience its European atmosphere and practice their French skills in a North American setting.

COMPLEX

The political history of Quebec is defined by a continuous effort to preserve its linguistic heritage and cultural autonomy within the broader context of North American anglophone dominance.

Origin

From French Québec, from Algonquin kepék (“(it) narrows”). Cognate with Mi'kmaq gepe'g (“plug”), and Mi'kmaq Kepinkek. It originally referred to the area around Quebec City where the Saint Lawrence River narrows to a cliff-lined gap. The name of the city preceded that of the province.

Usage

When referring to the city rather than the province, it is often called 'Quebec City' in English to avoid ambiguity.
