fixed phr.. you use this to say what you prefer to do or what you want to happen.

fixed phr.. a modal-like construction used to express a preference between alternatives; it functions syntactically as an auxiliary followed by a bare infinitive or a clause.


SIMPLE

I would rather stay home than go to the party.

CONTEXTUAL

If it is all the same to you, I would rather finish this report before we head out for lunch.

COMPLEX

The board of directors would rather invest in sustainable infrastructure now than face the inevitable regulatory penalties associated with carbon emissions in the coming decade.

Usage

followed by a bare infinitive when the subject is the same, or a past tense clause when the subject changes.

Teaching tip

highlight the 'd rather contraction and the use of the past simple for the 'unreal' present when the subject of the preference is different from the speaker.

Pitfall

I would rather to go by train.I would rather go by train.use the bare infinitive without 'to' after 'would rather'.
