The definite article 'the' is used to identify specific nouns that both the speaker and the listener already know. It can be used with singular, plural, and uncountable nouns.

Form

the + noun

The form of the does not change based on the gender or number of the noun. However, the pronunciation changes slightly if the following word starts with a vowel sound.

Use a or an for the first mention of a noun; use the for every mention after that.
