When an action is the main topic of a sentence, we use the gerund (-ing form) or the infinitive (to + verb) as the subject. The gerund is the standard choice for general activities, while the infinitive sounds more formal or abstract.

- To swim in the ocean requires strength. (Formal/Literary)

Both forms take a singular verb. Even if the gerund or infinitive is followed by a plural noun, the main verb remains singular because the subject is the action itself.
