Overview
In English, certain verbs require an object (a person or thing) before the to-infinitive. This pattern shows that the action of the second verb is performed by the object, not the subject of the sentence.
- Common verbs for this pattern include want, tell, ask, advise, remind, and warn.
- The object usually represents the person who receives the instruction or the person we want to do something.
Form
Subject + Verb + Object + To-Infinitive
The object (noun or pronoun) must sit between the main verb and the infinitive. If using a pronoun, always use the object form (me, him, her, us, them).
Examples
Common mistakes
I want that you come to the party.
I want you to come to the party.
Verbs like 'want' and 'ask' cannot be followed by a 'that' clause in this context.
She told to me to sit down.
She told me to sit down.
Do not use 'to' before the object with the verb 'tell'.
He reminded me call the bank.
He reminded me to call the bank.
Always include 'to' before the second verb in this pattern.
