A play on the phrase *two cents* and its variants. The term *latinum* originates from the television series *Star Trek: Deep Space Nine* (1993–1999), where it functioned as a precious material used by the Ferengi and other cultures as a medium of exchange.
The substance was a liquid in its natural state, which proved an impractical medium for pocket change. For the sake of convenience, it was enclosed in gold casings of a standardised size known as *slips*. One offered two of these when an opinion was required.
