Loanwords between English and Spanish

English has borrowed generously from Spanish — through the American West, the sea, and the kitchen. These words are instantly recognisable; the only real change is pronunciation.

The spelling sometimes anglicises (cañón → canyon), and the pronunciation always does — English will not roll the r in rodeo or soften the j. Said the English way, they pass unnoticed; a pronunciation drill lets students switch deliberately.

Traffic runs both ways. Modern Spanish has absorbed a wave of English words, especially in technology and business:

The meaning usually carries across cleanly, so these are effectively free vocabulary. But the pronunciation students learned in Spanish is often not the English one — Spanish tends to add a vowel (estrés) or shift the stress. In English, they need to reset to the English pronunciation rather than carrying the Spanish version across.
