Recognising academic English

The same advantage scales up. The core vocabulary of essays, research, law, and medicine is overwhelmingly Latin-derived.

For most learners, academic vocabulary is the last mountain. For Spanish speakers, much of it is already familiar terrain. This does not hand them the grammar or the argument structure — but the words mostly come free. When students report understanding more of an academic text than they expected, that instinct is trustworthy; name it for them so they stop second-guessing it.
