mattress

n. countable
A2 Elementary US //ˈmætɹəs// UK //mˈætɹəs// mat·tress

n. the large, soft part of a bed that you lie on. It is usually filled with foam or springs to make sleeping comfortable.

n. a large, rectangular pad for supporting the reclining body, used as or on a bed. It typically consists of a resilient core, such as springs or foam, encased in a heavy fabric cover.

SIMPLE

The new mattress is much softer than my old one.

CONTEXTUAL

After ten years of use, the mattress began to sag in the middle, making it difficult to get a good night's sleep.

COMPLEX

High-end manufacturers often combine layers of memory foam with pocketed coils to create a mattress that provides both pressure relief and structural support.

Origin

From Middle English materas, from Old French, from Arabic مَطْرَح (maṭraḥ, “place where something is thrown”), from طَرَحَ (ṭaraḥa, “to throw”). Compare divan, from Persian via Turkish (both of Middle Eastern origin, due to the local custom of lying on padding on floor being foreign to Europeans).
