Definition

n. A way to measure how clear a screen or digital picture looks. It counts how many tiny dots of color are in one inch; more dots mean a sharper, better image.

n. An abbreviation for Pixels Per Inch, used to quantify the resolution or pixel density of electronic displays and digital images. A higher PPI value indicates that pixels are smaller and more tightly packed, resulting in greater detail and less visible graininess to the human eye.

SIMPLE

This new smartphone has a very high PPI, so the text looks perfectly smooth.

CONTEXTUAL

When you print a photo, you need a high PPI to make sure the image doesn't look blurry.

COMPLEX

While screen size is important, the PPI is often a better indicator of visual quality because it measures how densely the information is packed.

Usage

Usually used with the definite article ('the PPI').
