n. countable
A1 Beginner US //ˌkæŋɡɝˈu// UK //kˈæŋɡɐɹˌuː// kan·ga·roo

n. a large Australian animal that moves by hopping on its strong back legs. The mother carries its baby in a pocket of skin called a pouch.

n. a large herbivorous marsupial of the family Macropodidae, native to Australia and New Guinea, characterised by powerful hind legs and a long tail.

SIMPLE

The kangaroo hops across the field.

CONTEXTUAL

During our trip to the Australian outback, we saw a kangaroo carrying a joey in its pouch.

COMPLEX

While several species of macropods exist across the continent, the red kangaroo is the largest, capable of reaching speeds of over fifty kilometres per hour through its unique hopping gait.

Origin

Borrowed from Guugu Yimidhirr gangurru (“eastern grey kangaroo”). (There is a popular myth that the word instead means "I don't know": supposedly, when Europeans asked what the kangaroo was, the Aboriginal Australians' answer meant "I don't know" and Europeans mistook this as the word for the animal. This is not true.)
