Etymology

From wheel + house. The compound originally named the small cabin on a vessel that contained the ship's wheel and steering mechanism. By the late 19th century, baseball had borrowed the term: a pitch thrown squarely into the batter's preferred hitting zone was said to be in his wheelhouse, the logic being that this was where he exercised control, as a helmsman did from his. The figurative extension to any person's established area of competence or authority followed naturally, and by the mid-20th century the word had settled into general use for anyone's particular domain of effectiveness.
